PostSubject: R2-D2 Pop Up Saber Variants   Tue Jul 23, 2013 11:26 am

After seing Walkies thread recently about the repo pop up saber, looking at his pictures I started to dought weather my saber was actually a Glasslite or something else. As I had a deal going through with Walkie I sent him my saber to compare it with his but I'll let him share the results with you, It is also the one on the gunnery described as the Glasslite without EPM's. Because its the only one without an EPM I started thinking could this actually be a different POTF variant as thats what R2 it came with and the reason I said it was Glasslite in the first place was because it was unsinkable.
I remember it came through ebay of an Canadian collector who I recognised from his user name on RS, but cant remember who, any thoughts on this would be great

Like Scott mentioned, he doubted his non-EPM saber was "Glasslite". So he recently posted it to me so that I could compare it against the two in my collection.

I'm happy to say that the saber isn't anything like my "Floating Repro" which I recently discovered, and here's a quick comparison photo.

Top-Bottom: Non-EPM saber / Floating Repro

More info on this "Floating Repro" can be found in this thread....

To the naked eye the Non-EPM Saber appears to be a slightly darker "solid" green colour to both my Glasslite sabers. When held against a back light it is alot less transparent.

Left to Right: Non-EPM Saber / Glasslite POTF / Glasslite DROIDS

Note - The Glasslite POTF / DROIDS sabers are slightly different colours just light the Kenner POTF / DROIDS equivalents.

Left to Right: Non-EPM Saber / Glasslite POTF / Glasslite DROIDS

Just like the Glasslite Sabers the Non-EPM Saber floats when dropped or submerged.

Center: Non-EPM Saber

Full line up....

Left to Right: Kenner POTF / Kenner DROIDS / Glasslite POTF / Glasslite DROIDS / No-EPM / Molded Green REPRO

Good work Scott and Stefan. What are your initial thoughts? For me I'm happy to keep it up on the Gunnery as a Glasslite until we get more proof to the contrary. We can also add we suspect it may be POTF and add a request to help with confirmation from other collectors/moc etc (we've done this with a few items recently when not 100% sure on origin).

Stefan - will also add the pics of your repro.

Thanks for the reply Paul and I'm glad you agree its original, to me it looks closest to the Glaslite POTF until you hold it to the light, but then under the light the two glasslite look slightly different so who knows. That would be great to if you could add it to the gunnery to try and get confirmation where its from.

some info on RS about non-epm sabers, looks like a few have popped up and they're confusing people. However they seem to be finding them with POTF R2's...

Great detective work there Walkie, I'd not seen those before and after reading them I'm going for V2 POTF

I don't know if you can tell from the pics but its worth mentioning that this saber is slightly darker than the Glasslite but lighter than the POTF and Droids sabers.

I managed to do a quick backlight test with the Kenner POTF & No-EPM sabers. Also I've photo'ed the only visible mould point I can see on the saber (circled).

Left to Right: No-EPM / Kenner POTF

Center: No-EPM

Me too, V2 POTF seems more likely.

Paul...Maybe we need to change the TIG weapon guide, as there is no evidence this saber is Glasslite. However them do seem to crop up with Kenner POTF R2's.

Quote for the (big bag) Wolff, which he has kindly let me share Smile

"I never have seen a saber without EPM. Even the ones that are called "non circled" I always see a circle.
Have you looked very very close?? Sometimes these circles are very very faint...nearly invisible...and they also can be up the handle (my galsslite has the EPM way above of the handle...next to the thicker part)

It looks real, in every shot....but I am not 100% sure if these exist without EPM??

It is possible of course because the all come from a spure tree. Other wepaons show the possibility with having the same mold (coming from one spure tree) but different areas of the EPM...i.e. Ree Yees with EPM on the left and EPM on the right.....and there is also weapons were some have EPM and some no EPM coming from the same spure."

Under the advice of Wolff I've examined the saber's handle (this is a little hard for me at the moment), ask AJ and Marco!!

There may be a EPM at the very top however I will re-check this as the saber is at home.

Center: No-EPM or is it?

To be continued.....

Great pictures Walkie, maybe it is there but I can't see an EPM on this one, to me it is the same variant as SF1138 here....
http://forum.rebelscum.com/t1088424/

And Jedi534's POTF here....

Yes they look the same, I need to re-check the saber by eye tonight, it may just be the photo playing tricks on me.

I've also ordered a UV light, thanks to Rawlin for the tip about repro/genuine items acting differently under UV.

Don't put all your stock into the results however, especially if it might be a non-Kenner.

From my Luke FB focus, I would say about 90% of mine original FB Sabers all glow brighter and/or shine in about the same as their original color.
However, of the 10% left in mine that glowed oddly compared to the legit ones:

1 was a RevalveIT new style DT repo
1 was a Taiwan Saber
1 was a China Saber
1 was a Glasslite Saber
1 was a Circles DT Saber

So although it could spot my one repo, 4 others were legit, but the plastic just shines oddly comparably.

I'll PM you a link Stefan showing what I mean in a minute.

By no means am I saying one thing or another, just posting my observations of my collection.
Bill McBride also mentions that UV is not a sure-fire test.

Anyway... check your PMs in a minute.

cheers!
Very Happy

I didn't mean it as a sure fire test, but I think uv can provide additional info that could be useful. I'm surely not the first but I've noticed that some repros that look identical under normal light look a lot different under uv and the real sabers I've tested have glown strongly.

But a bit more info under uv couldn't hurt. Especially when so many are at the same place and comparing them should be easy.

My guess is that the pop up repro among those sabers will not shine, the rest should.
But I've only done around 20 tests yet. And no green. Really looking forward for result Smile

Edit: thanks for the info. Interesting that the revalveIT looked different. I really thought it would shine as the originals.

Ditto! Looking forward to it.

What I found interesting is that a repro definitely looked odd under a UV source, but a Taiwan, China and Glasslite legit Luke FB saber did as well. I found the odd part being non-HK made sabers.
Well, there was one exception in a Luke DT saber, but who knows where it was actually made back then... Taiwan perhaps? PURE speculation, but some of the materials used outside the main HK plants in my collection reacted differently.

My FB sabers have nothing to do with this topic, just my UV impressions, but I can post up a pic I have if anyone is interested. (I don't want to hijack/go off topic).

cheers!

I understand that the uv test is not proof on it's own, but whilst I have a these all together it will be nice to carry it out.

I am sorry if my first post sounded that way.
It wasn't what I meant but I think we are all on the same page.

And seeing things under UV is just cool anyway!!! tongue
