Guys I recently got a chewbacca that has COO #6 that i’ve Been trying to hunt for a while, is there anything special about COO #5 and #6? Are they from a particular country in Europe or moc’s? What about coo #9 , is there still a question this is Palitoy ?
Where in the website I can find more about those different coo’s in the coo Guide?
Wouldn’t it be good to have a little comment under each figure in the coo guide with what is known today for each coo that is shown? Even if it is still not 100% confirmed but whatever evidence is available?
Look forward to your comments ! Best

Blog Update #6 (23/03/2018)

Luke Jedi MOC with SKU sticker - another “hard to find” Luke Jedi MOC variation for sale…
Topics tagged under 6 on The Imperial Gunnery Forum Luke_j31

I was going to talk about this auction along with the Luke Jedi Snape Cape MOC auction that I posted on the 5th March, but my time was limited and then I got totally blown away last week with my awesome Top Toys Luke Jedi present from Bryan & Rodolfo, so I am only now getting round to this blog posting now.

It’s a USA Kenner Made in Taiwan (TJ) Luke Jedi on a 77-A card back. However, the Kenner Product Number for Luke Jedi (No. 70650) printed at the top left corner of the card, has been covered-up by black sticker with the number “71590” printed on it.

Topics tagged under 6 on The Imperial Gunnery Forum Luke_j37

Considering that a Taiwan (TJ) Luke Jedi on a 77 card back is one of the most common Luke Jedi MOCs out there, these SKU sticker versions don’t pop-up that often. I have personally only ever seen 5 Luke Jedi MOC specimens with this SKU change-over sticker since beginning to collect Luke Jedi and then only on a 77-A card back. Let me know, however, if you own or have seen a Luke Jedi with the same SKU sticker on a 77-B, 79-A, 79-B  (or any other card backs) and I will update this blog and give credit to you.

Looking at the completed auction, I was a little surprised on how much it went for (relatively speaking in today’s high price market). It was most probably overlooked by the average “must be mint on a mint card” Joe, as they might not have realised what they were looking at and so I think the buyer had a very good deal there for a quite a hard to find variation.

As with all eBay auctions, the photos will eventually disappear and so I have posted photos of an example of a SKU stickered MOC from of my own collection above and below.

*** More Info on SKU Stickered Cards in General ***

I have noticed that these SKU stickers have also appeared on other characters too (as well as Luke Jedi), so they did have a purpose. Intrigued to know more, I have carried out my own research to come-up with a plausible reason for their existence...

Topics tagged under 6 on The Imperial Gunnery Forum Luke_j64

The text printed at the top left corner on the front of every figure card back relates to the specific Kenner Product Number for that specific figure/character. The Luke Jedi figure, for example, is 70650. The black number sticker 71590 is always placed over this number. At first glance, one might think that Kenner had updated the old 5 digit number for a new one; after all, they both begin with 7****.

However, I believe this is simply pure coincidence and not the case. There are only 3 differently numbered SKU stickers to be found (i.e. 71580, 71590 and 71600), yet there were 79 characters released by the end of the ROTJ lines – all with unique product numbers. Since there are only 3 different SKU stickers, you can find the same sticker-number combination on a number of different characters’ cards. Below are a number that were for sale by a single seller the other day:

Topics tagged under 6 on The Imperial Gunnery Forum Tie_fp10

I have noticed, however, that in general, the same bunch of characters always turn-up with the same specific sticker number. This interested me a lot as I have an old copy of the Kenner ToyFair Catalogue from 1984:

Topics tagged under 6 on The Imperial Gunnery Forum Toyfai10

It is from here, that I learnt that Kenner sold their figures in 3 different assortment boxes – each weighing 5lbs and containing 48 MOCs:

Assortment Number 69570

Topics tagged under 6 on The Imperial Gunnery Forum Toyfai11

Assortment Number 69590

Topics tagged under 6 on The Imperial Gunnery Forum Toyfai12

Assortment Number 93630

A simple google search for “Product SKU meaning” will bring about a ton of info. I have put a screen grab here of the most popular:

Topics tagged under 6 on The Imperial Gunnery Forum Sku_de10

So a SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) is normally used by the merchandiser chain to identify a particular item for stock inventory in each of its stores, ROTJ Star Wars Figures for example! Some chains would have lumped a group of characters under one stock bin.

I believe that the 3 SKU stickers are in fact a merchandiser's own internal numbering system to identify figures from each of the three assortment boxes from Kenner. I have no idea why it would want to do this. Maybe it helped automate the stocking/buying process back in the day, but the time and effort required to sticker-over each of the cards' product number suggests to me that a big chain was involved. Maybe the printed product numbers on the front of the cardbacks were causing confusion being 5 digits long, so they had to cover them up.

EDIT: A UPC barcode can actually be seen printed on the reverse of the ROTJ cardback in the photo, but this technology - along with the optical scanners that were required at checkouts to read them, might not have been as widespread in the early 80s as they are is in modern days, so maybe this is why the stickers were used.

What is certain however, is that by the time that The Power of the Force range came on to the scenes, Kenner had updated to the front top left corner of the card back with the following printed material:

  • The Character Kenner Product Number = 70650
  • The Kenner Assortment Box Number= 69590
  • The Merchandiser SKU Assortment Number = 71590

Topics tagged under 6 on The Imperial Gunnery Forum Sku_pr10

This helps me think that the merchandiser was significant, as Kenner took the liberty to print the SKU number onto the card for them. So in summary, I believe the SKU sticker is nothing more than an alternative/peusdo number for the Assortment box. Question is, who is the merchandiser? Well, I believe it to be no other than KMart - I lost count of the number of times I have seen a SKU MOC with a KMart price sticker somewhere near by.

My punt on what SKU sticker should be placed on what figures:

  • Figures from Kenner Assortment Box 69570 ---> SKU = 71580
  • Figures from Kenner Assortment Box 69590 ---> SKU = 71590
  • Figures from Kenner Assortment Box 93630 ---> SKU = 71600

Caveats:

During the years of Star Wars toys, the 3 Assortment boxes would have most probably have been updated to include new figures and older figures switched-out, so you might expect the figure's SKU to be in flux. Nevertheless 3 SKUs definitely appear (to me) to reflect the three assortment boxes available to retailers.

Also, the SKU stickers were applied by hand in mass quantities. It is very much likely that the stickers were applied to the wrong cards at various stages. If something doesn't look right, then one could look at other examples. If a 92-Back POTF release cardback of the figure exists, one could also compare the SKU number printed by Kenner at top left corner and compare that with the Assortment box you expect it to be in from the catalogue.

For Example: Based on the above, I expect a Chewbacca to have an SKU sticker of 71590, however, as can been seen, the SKU sticker applied is 71600. This doesn't make sense, as it is shown in the Kenner Catalogue to be in Assortment Pack 69590. However, if I look at the POTF carded version I can see that Kenner has correctly printed the SKU number as 71590; thus the wrong SKU sticker was applied for this example.

Update (11/07/2018)
[color=#ffff00]

I have recently stepped out of my comfort zone and took the plunge to join face book. It's only been a couple of weeks and I have already had the pleasure of meeting some top folks in some of the groups in FB. One of which is Jonathan Robinson.

Jonathan was kind enough to check his SKU MOC collection and found an anomaly in his run:

This is a Princess Leia Boushh 77-B with SKU sticker at the top left corner, but as you can see the retailer was KMart it was Toys R Us. This has dented my theory a little as KMart

and with a Toys R Us price sticker!

... TBC...

Up until now I was convinced that only KMart sold these MOCs with SKU stickers. It looks like we now say that these cards were avail

Coo markings are just a marking placed in the mold to show copyright ownership. Your marking is shown on #10 which is a palitoy non electronic version. This doesn't mean that that same mold wasn't used earlier by kenner for say version 6 which matches the description of yours. In fact since palitoy did not actually produce toys but just carded/boxed them it is almost guaranteed that the mold existed prior to palitoy ordering version for them. Ships haven't been researched in as much detail as figures because most collect figures. I don't doubt your ship is a #6 in that link and just came from a mold that had that coo marking. Also if the year is what is throwing you the copyright date is generally the date when someone filed the copyright and not when it was made hence you can find r2d2 carded return of the jedi figures with the original date on them as the mold was still used with the original copyright date and the figure did not undergo changes to the body. There maybe (likely are) other coo markings that aren't pictured at all also. This doesn't mean they don't exist, just the guide doesn't have a picture of it and coo marking for ships hasnt been as much of a collector's chase in variants like it is with figures.

1. European Smooth Deleted no CoO 2L HK (TIG guide #5) light brown hair (a childhood ROTJ card, sadly lost later into adulthood)

2. China 3L HK (TIG guide #8) blonde hair. A strange one. An eBay purchase from Brianstoys way back, & he came with a more translucent DT saber, they said he couldn't be AFA graded so sold him as a DT-maybe. I subsequently sold No 6 (£85, private sale, less than I paid for him) before I used TIG/Rebelscum/Others, to identify 'Circles' variant.

3. 3L HK (TIG guide #6) with early 'Circles' DT saber

4. 2L HK (TIG guide #1) badly welded torso, darker brown translucent hair

5. 2L HK (TIG guide #1) brown hair
I used the old TIG guide:

And sorry, China now has a Repro DT saber, but it's NEVER leaving my collection.

Hey Guys, not posted for a while but I spotted and bought this on eBay the other day thinking, "aha!, green paint on the cane, dark green head, must be a Ledy!"

... well it came through and now I'm not sure about the accessories, I think it might be a mix.

The figure itself I'm pretty sure is Ledy. From a previous ledy guide and associated coo pictures it matches #6, the 'regular' Ledy which, from the text says is uniqely Ledy (althought the picture says kenner/ledy so I'm not sure what happened there). Also it has the darker green paint and the cape is stuck to it too.

The cape I'm pretty sure is Ledy too, it has the tacky, darker green paint on it too which is a good sign.

But that's where my knowledge ends and I need your help!

Belt - I thought all Ledy belts had an EPM in the middle of the saber - am I wrong?

Cane - I thought all Ledy canes had an EPM on the reverse side of the handle - am I wrong?

Snake - I thought all Ledy figures came with brown snakes - am I wrong?

Mold #6 with thick tail

Topics tagged under 6 on The Imperial Gunnery Forum Salaci10

Mold 6 (on right) in comparison with mold 4

  • Paint on the shoulders and head hair is much darker than mold 4.
  • Tail is molded in a plastic which more closely matches the body colour.
  • Legs below the knees bend further back than 4.

COO guide for Teebo
Topics tagged under 6 on The Imperial Gunnery Forum Teebo10

NOTE: COO #4, #5, #6 are shared by Lili Ledy and Kenner.
These COOs only differ in very subtle ways from each other, and represent otherwise identical steel moulds that were used together during production, both by Kenner and Lili Ledy.

DIFFERENCES:
Compared to his Kenner counterpart, the Ledy Teebo has:
- A shade lighter grey stripes on his body (hard to grasp by camera, unfortunately)
- Glossy instead of dull grey nose and eyes

An overview of the small COO variations found in Ledy Teebo figures is given below. Pictures were made by Ozio.

PAINT VARIATIONS:

Major Variations:
The Lili Ledy Teebo has a variant with brown eyes and nose. This figure appears with grey stripes that have the same intensity compared to a regular Ledy Teebo, or with a shade darker stripes (comparable to a no COO Teebo).
You can read more about this interesting variant in an upcoming entry in Ozio’s special report section.

REMARK:

The Lili Ledy Teebo is hard to distinguish from the Kenner no COO figure. Personally I think Teebo is the toughest figure to identify. But like that other tough figure (Ackbar) you have to look into their eyes.

If you plan to buy a Ledy teebo make sure you have a no COO Teebo at home for comparison. With both figures in hand, the differences are much more obvious. The eyes are different, and the stripes of the no COO Teebo are a bit darker.

To help you, I made a few more comparison shots, including the Taiwan figure. Notice the different eye colours.

HOOD/SKULL:

Did you know?
I always thought that Teebo was wearing the skull of a wild pig.
Today I actually learned that it is the skull of a Gurreck, a horned predator native to the Endor forests.
This little Ewok kills brute predators!!! My respect for Teebo has grown a lot today. Very Happy

YODA

COO guide for Yoda
Topics tagged under 6 on The Imperial Gunnery Forum Yoda10

A. COO #6 is unique to Lili Ledy (‘regular’ no COO Ledy Yoda)
B. COO #3 is shared by Lili Ledy and Kenner (rare Hong Kong Ledy Yoda)

Remark: COO #6 was derived from COO #3 and therefore both COO types belong to the same COO family. The mould of both Ledy Yoda's (COO#6 and COO#3) is therefore the same.

A. Yoda with COO #6

The dark green skin Yoda with black eyes is the common Lili Ledy Yoda. This figure was released on Regreso 30- and 50-backs.

Yoda. From left to right (1 → 4): 1. Lili Ledy COO #6, 2. Lili Ledy COO #3, 3. Kenner COO #2 (with green snake), 4. Kenner COO #2 (with orange snake).

Let’s have a look at the different green tones of Yoda’s head and the colour/shape of the pupils.
There is quite some variation as you can see:

Comparison between the green tone of Yoda’s head and the colour/shape of the pupils.
Top row: From left to right (1 → 4). All are Kenner figures having COO #2.
Bottom row: From left to right (5 → 8 ): Lili Ledy COO #6 (figure 5, 6 & 7), Lili Ledy COO #3 (figure 8 ).

Topics tagged under 6 on The Imperial Gunnery Forum Yoda_610

So what we see?
1: Kenner COO #2: Dark brown, Pacman shaped pupils. Green head tone: ++++
2: Kenner COO #2: Dark brown, Pacman shaped pupils. Green head tone: +++
3: Kenner COO #2: Orange, small round shaped pupils. Green head tone: +
4: Kenner COO #2: Cherry, big round shaped pupils. Green head tone: ++

5: Lili Ledy COO #6: Black, Pacman shaped pupils. Green head tone: +++++
6: Same
7: Same
8: Lili Ledy COO #3: Orange, irregular shaped pupils. Green head tone: ++++

DIFFERENCES:

Compared to Kenner Hong Kong figures having COO #2, the ‘regular’ Ledy Yoda has:
- An unique COO (COO #6)
- A head which is cast in a darker green plastic
- Darker green paint on hands and feet. The paint is often still tacky leaving stains on cape, cane, and snake (good signs that the accessories are genuine Ledy BTW! )
- Very black instead of dark brown Pacman shaped pupils

B. Yoda with COO #3

The Lili Ledy Hong Kong Yoda is a rare figure having a lighter green skin and orange eyes. The figure is included in the pics together with the ‘regular’ no COO Yoda (see section A).
The Lili Ledy Hong Kong Yoda has been confirmed on a "Retorno" 12 back with the Lili Ledy Guarantee sheet inside the bubble!
This Yoda might even been released on the early “Imperio Contraataca” (ESB) cards, but sofar definite proof is lacking.

DIFFERENCES:

Compared to Kenner Hong Kong figures having COO #2, the Ledy Hong Kong Yoda has:
- A head which is a shade darker than most Kenner figures, though the head is not so dark as the ‘regular’ Ledy Yoda.
- Same for the paint used for the hands and feet
- Orange, irregular shaped pupils

The figure came with the same accessories (cape, cane, snake and belt) as the ‘regular’ Ledy Yoda.

You can read more about this interesting Lili Ledy Yoda in Ozio’s special report.
Special Report: Unknown and Rare Lili Ledy Figures

UPDATE NOV 2013: A third Lili Ledy Yoda version was recently discovered by TIG member Merlin. This version looks like the HK version having a lighter green skin. However, instead of orange eyes this version has black eyes, like the more common Lili Ledy Yoda. As such it looks like a transition figure between the two Yodas described earlier in this post.
This third version was confirmed on a "Regreso" 14 back. Unfortunately, the COO of the figure has not been identified yet. Will it be COO#3 or COO#6?
This Yoda version could well be a transition figure between the light green HK version and the dark green no COO version.

RIGHT: Lili Ledy Yoda on Regreso 14-back: Light Green Skin with Black Eyes. COO?

UPDATE NOV 2013: Even a fourth Lili Ledy Yoda version was recently discovered. This version looks like common dark green skin version. However, instead of COO #6 (no COO) this figure has COO#3 (HK).
Like the third Yoda version this fourth version could well be a transition figure between the light green HK version and the dark green no COO version. I first saw this Yoda on ebay about one year ago (but lost the auction). Luckily TIG Member Trappedtexan found another one (see pics below).

LEFT: Lili Ledy Yoda: Dark Green, Black Eyes, COO#6. This is the common Ledy version.
MIDDLE: Lili Ledy Yoda: Dark Green, Black Eyes, COO#3. This appears to be a transition figure between the right and left figure.
RIGHT: Lili Ledy Yoda, Light Green, Orange Eyes, COO#3. The Hong Kong COO Ledy version.

ACCESSORIES

CAPE:

The Ledy cape has a very slight beige tone compared to a Kenner cape and is made from a slightly softer fabric.

CANE:

The Ledy Yoda has a reddish brown cane having a mould circle at the top. I have a few canes with the same mould in my collection which came with regular Kenner figures. I can’t imagine they are all Ledy, so it is safe to assume that the same mould was used by Kenner as well. The colour of the Kenner canes is different: Light brown or brown.
Therefore, to be 100% sure you have a Ledy cane, it should be reddish brown.

Topics tagged under 6 on The Imperial Gunnery Forum Yoda_111

Topics tagged under 6 on The Imperial Gunnery Forum Yoda_112

BELT:

The Ledy Yoda carries a belt which is easily identified by the mould circles on the small light saber (that silver ‘thing’), pouch and connecting ring. Keep in mind however that Kenner also used the same mould to cast belts, so the Lili Ledy belt mould is not exclusive to LL!. The Kenner belt is slightly lighter brown compared to LL.

Topics tagged under 6 on The Imperial Gunnery Forum Yoda_113

UPDATE NOV 2013: I have recently acquired a sealed Yoda ESB-a baggie with green snake. Interestingly this Yoda has all the Kenner counterparts of Ledy acessories (cane, belt, and snake, all with those little mould circles, or better ejector pin marks). That confirms that the steel moulds of the cane, belt, and snake were shared by Kenner and Lili Ledy. The Ledy accessories can be distinguished as described in this post.
Probably these accessories belong to the COO family formed by COO#3 and COO#6. Kenner figures having COO #3 would therefore also come with a cane, belt, and snake having ejector pin marks.

SNAKE:

The Ledy Yoda carries a snake around his neck having mould circles on top (V1 mould) or on the bottom (V2 mould) of the snake’s head. Both moulds are not unique and were used by Kenner as well.

One way to distinguish a Ledy snake is by colour. The colour of a brown Ledy snakes differs in a very subtle way from a Kenner brown snake. However this can probably only be seen when you have them in both in your hands.
In case the mould circle is on top of the snake’s head (V1 mould), there is another difference. The area around the circle is less indented compared to a Kenner snake, which can easily be observed. Maybe this has something to do with the plastic used by Lili Ledy. Kudos for Wolff for describing this first!

Topics tagged under 6 on The Imperial Gunnery Forum Yoda_119

Note: I included the green Kenner snakes in this overview, as they appeared to have the same mould as the brown Ledy snakes (V1 and V2). Probably the green Kenner snakes left the factory as brown snakes 30 years ago, and their present appearance is due to discolouration. Apparently Lili Ledy used a different type of plastic which is not prone to discoloration. Green Ledy snakes has not been confirmed sofar..
