To the variant collectors among us (loose) ..

Tan limbed Klaatu
Green limbed Chewbacca

Variation or not? Specifically the Klaatu.

The reason I ask is because I know they aren't legitimate variations, in my eyes its degradation of the plastic and many others would agree but AFA keep labelling them up as variations..

There is a trilogo Klaatu on ebay right now for 300 bucks just because its apparently the rare "mixed limb" variation with 2 tan limbs and 2 grey limbs.

He was meant to be grey!

I would be interested to hear either thoughts on the AFA mislabelling and some discussion on what is a real variant and what isn't with regard to fading limbs. If you do truly believe its a variant please give a valid reason why !

The green limbed Chwie is plastic degeneration while the tan limbed Klaatu is a legit variant.

You can find some odd looking tan limbed Klaatus what is due to plastic degeneration (it looks like the degeneration is "highlighting" the tan effect) but the real tan variant exists.

It is my opinion so I don't need "valid reasons" Wink

What doesn't help is that people weren't taking pictures of factory fresh figures to compare to, all we have are 25-30 year old plastic to try and make assumptions on it being a production change or a degeneration over time.

Well I don't think you need valid reasons to collect anything Uli but I think you need a valid reason to call it a variation thats all Wink

Interesting, I'm not sure about the Klaatu but I've always considered the Chewie a colour degradation - are AFA labelling up green limb Chewie's as variants then? Or just the Klaatus?

Both Paul!

If a figure has 1 or 2 tan limbs it gets called "mixed limbs"

Chewie is graded as green limbed variant... Shocked

Alright as in a legit variation Dan?

I thought of a similar thing that might change your mind, knowing you like cars- if someone tried to sell you an old spare tyre with no tread on it would you buy it or buy one in better condition? (edit as we cant buy new vintage Razz so new tyre isnt a good comparison lol)

It's not exactly the same but a green limbed chewbacca is basically wear and tear + has aged badly, much like the tyre its not meant to look like that. Chewbacca was brown all over the world and only age has made the limbs green !

The green limbs Chewie is not a true variant, but the green bowcaster is.

Ueli: Are you telling that there are Klaatus with 'degradation tan' and 'real tan'? Starts to be complex,

What do you think of my ultra rare green limbs Obi, shall I send it to AFA right away? Very Happy

I have two different tan limbs Klaatus and the key to them being a true variation is that their face colour is a blue/green rather than green. Interestingly one has 3 tan limbs and one has 4 tan limbs. Mind you if someone on ebay thinks a 2 tan limbed one is worth $300 then the 3 tan limbed one i've offered for sale in the forums for £15 better be changed to £1500!! I love peoples ebay asking prices!!

Anyway, I've taken a couple of comparison pics. There are 2 normal ones and 2 tan limbed ones in the pics, the tan limbed versions are on the bottom in both pics.

As for the green limbed chewbacca. I have seen several chewbaccas with different degrees of green coloured limbs which to me says they are simply plastic degradation.

Hope this helps
Dave

Just my opinion but i do feel the Tan limbs Klaatu is just plastic degeneration i did have a picture of a Klaatu where only half of the same leg had turned tan and the other half (of the same leg) hadnt that proved it for me ill try and dig the picture out.

To take Marco's point the Green Chewie Crossbow is a true variation many of the early weapons were Semi translucent Green epsecially common on early issues of the first 12 (i.e Stormie Blaster, Hans Rebel Blaster, Chewie bowcaster etc)

What can i say about the green limbs chewie lol its simply a rotten figure! AFA used to grade it as a variant but after some backlash on RS a few years back i believe they now see it as plastic dengeneration.

Just to throw something else in the Mix (and i know many dont agree with me) but i also believe the Green Yoda Snake is simply a Brown Yoda Snake that has plastic degeneration heres an example of the process mid way through turning -

Hmm so in order to have tan limbs he should have a blueish face?

Variant collectors: Your thoughts on "tan/green limbs" Imgp0021

Like in your picture above?

Where does this fella fit in then? He looks the normal shade of green to me.

Variant collectors: Your thoughts on "tan/green limbs" Klaatu28

Not only that but both your blueish ones look different to each other which could indicate different degrees of degradation?

Like Dr Dengars Kenobi, I just can't see it being anything other than plastic breaking down - my opinion of course- I haven't studied klaatu limb colours! I don't wish to put peoples collections in the trash either I just find variants interesting from the research aspect. If you can determine a variations origin then you can begin to weigh up its chances of being legit.

For example if all trilogos are the ones that carry tan limbed klaatus then it could be traced back to the plastic/colour plastic used in the factory that distributed on trilogo cards, if you can find tan limbs on a Canadian Kenner or a US Kenner as well as trilogos then it would appear to me more a degradation factor.

Even so, at the moment it looks more like a plastic reaction to me, from either age/UV damage or when a figure has been sitting in its own plastic fumes inside a bubble so long..

Your post wasn't very clear so I thought I would ask (first part was a question Wink ) but figured I would throw the other part in there in case you did think they were a vari Smile

What i find crazy is rebelscum recognises the Tan Limb Klaatus as specifically a factory variation yet they seem to think the Dark Armour Pale Face Tri/PBP Dengar is plastic degeneration EDIT they seem to have removed comments stating the dark armour was plastic degeneration but still list this as a probably cause for the pale face ?? Nuts if you ask me!

Jay-That yoda snake pic is very telling. I've been looking to pick up a green snake yoda, but after seeing that, I'm not in such a hurry anymore.

Tan limb Klaatu is a variation, Jay & I have clashed heads about green snake Yoda Laughing brown snakes can turn green but a true green snake is different in texture (far more flexible) Green limb Chewie really only happens to a couple of COO chewies but is still degredation.

The discussion about variations also depends on what you define a variation to be- if the factory did it on purpose? If this is the 'definition' then many of the 'foreign' variations are not variations they are just different plastics or paints used by accident.
