LUCASFILM TO BUILD PLANNED “STAR WARS” COMMUNITY
For immediate release – 16 December 2010
Roswell, New Mexico – In a bold move that could solidify or destroy a legacy, George Lucas announced that his company, Lucasfilm, has just secured the land and approval to build a 2000 home community outside of Roswell, New Mexico. The location, made famous for its alleged alien crash, will now add Wookiees, Jedi, and Ewoks to its list of inhabitants as the “Star Wars Community Republic” is officially underway.
The planned community will be completely devoted to Star Wars and it’s seemingly infinite appeal to people of all races, colors, creeds and yes, sexes. The community will have amenities that will bring people across the galaxy in, including 3 pools, children’s waterslides, spa, and of course, mock ups of popular SW areas like Hoth, Endor and Tatoonie. A gym is also planned but not finalized. Starting in the mid $200,000s the homes themselves will also be top notch, but certainly designed for the fan in mind. Houses can be custom built but, according to a developer close to the project but under NDA, will have to adhere to some common themes.
“Each home will have some distinct features associated with the movies. Carports will be shaped like Darth Vader’s mask. Each room will have some tie-in. Some are small, like the Ewok wall sconces, but some are pretty interesting like the media room’s entire floor has the Imperial Navy insignia etched in it. We had a small R2D2 made up to be the toilet but nobody felt it was fair to pee in the little guy!”
With a date set to open in 2017 in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the films release, people will need to get ready to prove they have what it takes to live here. There will be a comprehensive screening process to ensure each person or family has the proper amount of Star Wars in their lives, according to consultant Val Michaels.
“We are going to have a questionnaire online to test prospects, to show that they have some basic knowledge of the movies, by answering trivia questions. I mean if you don’t know 4-LOM was really the robot, we won’t (doing quote motion) Serve your kind here”.
He went on to give a glimpse of what to expect but admitted that some aspects were up in the air.
“We’ve decided that the fans are broken into subcultures so we are considering breaking the 2000 homes into sections. You know Movie Fans, Vintage Toy Collectors, EU, and of course the current Clone Wars. The issue is that is seems to go against the whole point of building this community, which is to bring these folks together” He continued, “The internet age has given fans a chance to connect with people who share interests but might be thousand of miles away. This will close that gap and for some fans, who rarely interact live with fellow fans outside of cons, give them a chance to find some friends who can speak intelligently about Han shooting first or why Darth Bane is a cyborg dressed as a cowboy.”
With the land approval done and developer selected, we can be sure to see more on this in the coming year. Lucasfilm has announced that floor plans and mock ups will be available online in the first half of 2011 but, you’ll have to find it. The website will not be announced and fans will have to track it down if they want to be first in line for consideration.
