PostSubject: Rebel Soldier help   Rebel Soldier help I_icon_minitimeMon Apr 18, 2011 10:46 am

Hey Guys,
I recently bought these 4 figures, the Rebel Soldier was included free as the seller said it didn't look like a regular Rebel Soldier, i'm assuming it's fake? Can anyone shed any light on it?
Thanks

Ifffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff it's legit it is a trilogo Rebel Solider. That Chocolate looking body is pretty rare. Can you get some good close ups and post them?

It´s a fake.
The face should be pale or pink, but definately not yellow. The brown doesn´t also match with the brown of a real DBRS.

My intitial thoughts were the face - as stated it doesn't seem to match with the pale or pink variants i've seen not withstanding the colour of the boots and jacket.

I'm still waiting on the item to come through in the post, as soon as it comes i'll take a closer look and post some pictures. Were these hand painted over the more generally realeased versions?

I'm not bothered if, as seems likely it is a fake, it was included for nothing but it strikes me as slightly odd - the seller was dissolving a collection he's owned for years - i bought something from him before and the price was good and the item was great. Oh well.

Here are some hints when spotting a possibly DBRS.
1. Have a look at the face...as mentioned it should be pink or pale.
2. Ask for the COO. The DBRS is always a no COO. If the Seller says he has no Country of Origin...
3. Ask for some pictures of the COO. It could be a painted no coo COO raised blank bar or a Meccano Soldier. The DBRS has got always COO #5 (referring to Wolffs COO guide)

Cheers,
I'll take a look at Wolffs guide. I thought it was probably too good to be true, i paid £60 for the lot which i thought covered the value of the other three. Do you know how these were copied, are we talking straight paint over the top of the normal orangey colour?

I assume it is simply painted over with dark braon color.

It doesn't even look like the right shade of brown for the Trilogo Rebel Soldier. This one looks way too dark compared to the real ones I've seen.

Yeah i think we picked up on the jacket. Out of interest, how many real ones have you seen? As in held? Just curious to hear what you think the exact shade of brown should be since pics on PC's don't always give a true idea.

I've only seen photos, none in person. But I don't need to see one in person to know that yours is fake by comparison. The color is too dark, and more importantly it's a matte color instead of the glossy brown that real ones have. For example:

Someone clearly just painted your figure with a flat acryllic dark brown paint.

Really? And you've scratched that acrylic paint off the back of mine to 'clearly' see that? It's reassuring to know we've got experts on board, even if they are basing their judgements solely on pictures from internet searches. I didn't think it was genuine for the reasons already flagged but at the same time i was looking for some insight as to what other collectors thought, preferably those with hands on knowledge of this figure.

FYI pictures can throw up all sorts of potential problems in authenticating figures, the glossy brown jacket? None of the legit examples i've ever seen look remotely as glossy as your example, so if you see one and turn it down due to the lack of gloss i'd maybe get a better range of pictures for yourself.

I want to scratch the paint of myself in the same way i'd want to scratch my nail across the inside of a VC Jawas cape, you'll find it's tricky to do that through a picture. So, thanks for your input but if it's all the same, i'll go with the knowledge of collectors who have had these pass through their hands and personally, if i was asked for similar input i'd probably be a little more reserved in giving a definitive answer unless my knowledge extended to a figure beyond pictures.

Regardless, it seems we got our answer but you might want to rethink being the authority on authenticating. Pictures may speak a thousand words but neither of these two are saying glossy jacket to me...

Two for your archive:

So then why did you post a picture of your figure in the first place if we shouldn't base our opinions on a PHOTO? Or why even start a thread asking other collectors about their opinion of the legitimacy of your figure if you're just going to dismiss any contrary opinions because we don't have the figure to examine in person? Seriously, what's with the attitude? You seem awfully defensive and condescending in your responses. What exactly did you EXPECT any of us to say? "Sure, that looks real! Nice figure!" Rolling Eyes

The first picture looked like matte paint to me, which immediately screams "fake!". All I can do is comment on what I see. I'm sorry if that casual observation wasn't good enough for you.

Because i've been collecting Tri Logos since the late 90's - enough time to see that this platform throws up all sorts of oddities and inconsistencies. Besides which, someone may have come forward and said no, it's not a regular dark brown RS soldier with the pale or pink face face but other examples are known.

As for being awfully defensive and condescending, it just kinda puts my back up when you get people being as blunt as you, making assumptions when in actual fact their knowledge extends no further than a few pictures they've found on the internet. I dunno, i'd be more inclined to phrase my response differently if i was offering an opinion but your insight seems to know no bounds, even down to the type of paint used.

Out of interest, what would you recommend to strip the 'acrylic' paint off with? Solvent or water based? And some pictures may help.

Edit: My reply was in response to your original, when you've finished editing it to sound different again let me know.

That's not a 'casual observation' that's a definitive response that the figure is fake, the reason why and how it's been achieved.

That is unless your going to re-edit a differently worded reply again?
