PostSubject: Wind-Up R2-D2 actual figure or not?   Wind-Up R2-D2 actual figure or not? I_icon_minitimeWed Oct 19, 2011 4:35 pm

Just wondering what peoples opinions where about the wind-up R2-D2 from Canada.

For years, well as long as I've been collecting infact, I have never classed it as part of the vintage figure line. The reasons being, firstly the size, he is a different scale to the other R2's and secondly the card design is unique to him alone. Finally, the fact he was only sold in Canada.

The reason I ask is because the other week I saw the card back for the first time ever, and it advertises the other figures from the 3 3/4" line same as the regular cards do, which is as good as saying that Kenner Canada classed it as being part of that line. So now I'm wondering.

What do you guys feels about this figure?

Can we get a photo of it as i am not familiar with that figure, though if it helps I class the takara wind up as part of the vintage figure line, saying that I also include things like Jabba sy snootles & the pro-bot droid, there is rather mixed opinions about what goes where within collections, but IMHO its all about what matters to you & how you feel about if it does or does not belong in your collection.

hope this is more help than extra confusion to the question!

It was also release in Japan by Takara. There is three different molds known --> see coo guide!

I personally have a loose stuff you can imagine ..but not this one! To me it doesnt belong to the line no matter whats advertised on the back.

I know lots of people do yount him to the line or to a Takara set, but to me this one doesnt fit.

Cheers Wollf, I've always thought of it as a kind of novelty figure and not part of the line, and I've never really thought about buying one. Plus they cost a small fortune!

Well. It is an action figure made to look like R2. Soooooo yes, to answer the question asked in the post title, Wind-Up R2 is an actual figure. Wink

It's part of the vintage figure line IF you count dianoga, probot, 3 leg R2, rebo band, jabba etc. I consider it part of the line more so than the droids & ewok series.

 Hey James...I dont get it...why do you compare the R2 wind.up to Jabba and Dianoga?? I mean at least this stuff was produced by Kenner and really belongs to the line. Its not my goal here to argue with anybody who has a different opinion, but this comparison doesnt work for me. The R2 is foreign and is no action figure. Its a wind-up toy. Okay dianoga is also no action figure, but Jabba and rebo band are action figures.
This is BTW the same reason why I dont collect non movable bootlegs...no action at all What a Face

BTW: I agree on the droids and ewoks series. These also will never find a way into my collection.

Maybe lets write it different:
Figures from the line are articulated and are made to look like the charcaters from the original movie in the best way they could as child toys and in the time they were made.

The wind-up thing has 2 legs and 2 arms Shocked Shocked ...I never saw such R2 unit in any film lol! Just look at the artwork on the card.....its toooo funny!!

Well as said...I dont want to argue as said to ME it doesnt belong to the line and to ME it isnt even a R2. Of course everybody has the right to think different. Wink

Edit: I have a serious question: I only saw the Takara one in baggies. Am I right that the japanese one never appeared on a cardback??

The Jabba & Dianoga comparison was maybe a bad example. I was trying to give examples of 'figures' that did not appear on the back of a cardback- and even that's wrong because Jabba does appear on some cardback backs Embarassed . As far as I know the wind up was only Canadian carded. I keep my wind ups next to the playmobile version tongue If I was to display just one complete set I guess the windup would not be in the mix.

Haha, that Playmobile R2 Rocks!
It's always an arse trying to catorgorize whats a figure and whats not. I just wondered what everyone else thought about the R2.

When I used to collect modern figures, It became hard trying to decide what was classed as a figure or creature or beast, because you had everything from a tiny mouse droid all the way up to Graxol Kelvyyn who was ,like twice the hieght of the average figure.
Eventually I settled on intelligence. If it's intelligent then it's a figure not a beast, that kinda worked. The vintage collection of course isn't as vast as that so that doesn't really matter.

Basically I was hoping you'd all shoot it down so the OCD in me wouldn't feel compelled to shell out a small fortune for one!!! :I am stupid:

hmmm to me its:

character: it can talk...or has kind of language! Jabba, Rebo Band, Salicious
Beast/creature: cannot talk...like an animal: like TaunTaun, mynock, Rancor, Wampa
and droids.: R2, 3po and mouse droid...all the same to me!! LOL

well...this is how I do categorize...thats why Jabba, Rebo Band and salicious are in my coo guide and Wampa, Rancor and TaunTaun are not! Wink

BTW: I have the blue Playmobil!! Would love to add the white one for a "common-sense" price Wink

Haha, yes that's wasn't worded very well at all really was it, when you think about it, given it has an actual action, you could say it's more of an action figure than any of the others in some respects. Very Happy

First off, AJ you have serious issues. How can you knock down all those Joe_O's!

I'm with Wolff on it not being a figure. It's more of a novelty toy. I know it was on an 18-Back Kenner Canada but it was also the only 18 Back. I do have one, but I got it for it's novelty , not because it was part of the line. I also don't consider Dianoga part of the line either. He was an accessory IMHO.

I feel I've written this countless times but , for me, here's what I consider a full set of figures

Everyone on the "Collect all 92" cardback plus

Yak Face
Original R2D2
R2D2 with Sensorscope
Original C3PO
Vinyl Cape Jawa
Blue Snaggletooth
Sy Snootles
Max Rebo
Droopy McCool

The reason for the Band but not Jabba (which I can go either way on really) Is the band was more of a multipack of figures. Jabba was a playset. I also don't consider the DT figures since they were a weapon change. The VC Jawa, while an accessory change, is so noticeable of a difference I count it. Yeah Yeah I know the sabers would be different, so don't bother pointing it out LOL

Point is, it's open to interpretation. And there is the fun in collecting!
