PostSubject: Question about factory mark on jawa cardback & coo on figure.   Question about factory mark on jawa cardback & coo on figure. I_icon_minitimeMon Nov 14, 2011 4:41 pm

I have read with interest Craig T's Luke Jedi topic linking COO & factory marks on cardbacks to the COO on the corresponding loose figures. This inspired me to check my small collection of assorted MOC's. As a result I found a Kenner Jawa on a 65 back (offerless) Made In Hong Kong card with HG next to the POP. I then noticed that I have a Kenner Jawa on a 65 back (Emperor offer) Made In China card which also has HG next to the POP.

Firstly, does the HG mean the same company had factories in both Hong Kong & China?

Secondly, to the best of my knowledge there are no loose Jawa's with a China COO. Would both figures share the same COO? If so, would that be Hong Kong or be blank? Smile

Thank you for your welcome pomse2001.

I have regularly been visiting this site for some time & have found it to be a great resource. Up til now I have been able to answer most of my questions looking at the threads, but this one has stumped me.

Welcome to the forum, why not introduce yourself in & share your collection with the members?.

I think folks have been hanging off making a reply to your post due the the embarrassment factor, I know I nearly replied yesterday but felt awkward & its an easy enough mistake to make, but I have to break the ice & LYK that Hong kong is in china m8, so yes the company had several plants in china I presume (china/Hong kong & Macau) - I do hope I have this right.

I have also never seen a China COO Jaws, have you checked the COO guire by Woolf & the variants thread by snagletooth?

Thanks for your welcome & input frunkstar.

I am aware that both Hong Kong & Macau are now once again part of China, but prior to 1997 Hong Kong was a colony of the British Empire & was governed separately to the Peoples Republic of China, and prior to 1999 Macau was a Portuguese colony. I presume that is why figures are found with the corresponding COO's.

Due to the politics in these parts of Asia during the time the vintage figures were produced it surprises me that a company operating in Hong Kong also operated in mainland China.

I don't have any MOC's from Macau. Does anyone know what factory stamp those cards have?

As a new member, I checked Woolf's COO guide (which is an excellent work in progress) & other sources before posting this question, as I did not want to ask the sort of commonly repeated question that would generate a lot of groans.

I'll make sure I introduce myself in the appropriate thread.

Cheers!

AH! had not considered Chinas troubled political past, - always his mind on the moment rather than thinking about the future - or the past lol! doh

I don't think any cards are marked with Macao, but I am sure they will have some form of markings indicating the production location, maybe in code form, sadly I do not collect MOC (yet) so am not a great deal of help I know, but I am sure one of the other guys will chime in with some more constructive input for you soon.

Hi cantina_patron!

Welcome to TIG! Great first post, I think you’ve got everyone stumped with it lol Very Happy

Jawa is IMO a difficult figure to make sense of with regards to the coo on cards, baggies & the figure itself. As you say, you can only find the figure with Hong Kong or no coo (both found on a few different cards) but the packaging can read China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, even Macao! Wink I don’t think the factory marks HG etc. are fully understood yet? but even if they do mean both figures were made by the same company it’s still possible for them to have different coos IMO. Unfortunately with the Jawa cape in the way of the coo markings, the only way you’ll get your answer is to open the cards Sad or better, find someone who has done this already.

As for Macau marked cards, the 77A Macau Gam. Guard I had is also marked HG, the 65B Macau Gam. Guard has no mark (neither do 65B Macau Lograys) & the 65A Hong Kong Gam. Guard is marked HT???

Rog.

Thanks for the input so far guys!

aussiejames-that card back is one I've not seen before. Interesting...

Rog-as you say the cape covering the COO is a major hurdle when dealing with moc's. lol! I had considered asking people to check carded figures with opened or broken bubbles, but where these things pass through so many hands there is no guarantee the figure is original to the card, so I changed my mind. I think I read somewhere a question about whether or not AFA keep records of card & figure details when U grading, but don't recall seeing an answer.
Cheers for the info on the cardbacks, it will be useful for future reference. It would seem linking COO's to specific factories is somewhat more difficult than I thought. But that's what these forums are for.

pomse2001- Nice work with the loose Jawa variants, it's always good to see new sources of info.

I've got a few loose jawa variants, but I can't add anything new to what is already available on this forum.
