I saw GNT's comments on the thread regarding Joe and Michael's reply. As a mod , I always felt that I did owe people some explanation when I made a move that was impacting. I was a little surprised to see GNT say that mods don't need to. Don't get me wrong I make the decision and act on it, but if I ban someone, delete a thread, etc. it usually was due to someone breaking a rule. By explaining my thought process and why I made the choice, I think it gives everyone a chance to learn what's acceptable and what is isn't. A forum-wide teaching if you will.

Anyone have any opinions on this? Be honest, or I'll ban your ass! lol!

Paul's (kiss') upcoming ban won't need an explanation Laughing "knob dickbag" how did that not get censored?? Even Wouter's limelight is odd**** Razz

GNT meant a public explanation is not always needed, but incorrectly assummed Joe was sent a private one.

The whole situation is absolute bullshit. All of the mods dropped the ball on this situation from the beginning.

I did see the initial post about the "POT2 yard sale find" and my first thought was "This should be moved, it doesn't belong in the vintage section", so I ignored the thread and missed the resulting posts.

So...the mods didn't move the thread to the relevant section, which was a big mistake.

The minute that the OP started on his rant, a warning should have been issued...and the thread should have been moved. That homophobic slur (that I later read about) should have gotten the OP a ban at that point.

After it turned uglier (from what I can gather), the thread should have been edited for content and locked, so others could see what happened, but that is not the case.

That section of RS needs a more hands on mod, who is online more and able to step in and ...you know...MODERATE!!!!

*sheesh*

If the reason behind the action taken by a mod is unclear, then I think some sort of explanation would stop a lot of second guessing & help ensure other members don't make the same mistake in future.

Personally, I think mods and admins should explain themselves on their decisions when it comes to matters like that. If not who really knows what you can or cant do on a forum. I know theres a set order of rules, but most really arent that detailed in whats acceptable or not. Like in the past here, there was a certain thread that had posts deleted in it and I asked why. The person responsible for removing them (he knows who Im talking about so no need in saying who) said they werent relavent to the topic. To me they were. It was all based on the OPs opinions on something that he would NOT accept the answer he was given. Plus it also showed the OPs attitude while he was still able to be here. If those comments were still there, everybody wouldve been able to see what all went down and why. So, its pretty much a 2 way street. Somethings are meant to be deleted (the poster in the RS thread for his homophobic slurs) and not meant to be (the thread comments here). But all in all, if a thread is edited, locked or removed, I think the person doing it should explain why its being done so it wont happen again.

Should mods give an explanation?? I think so. At the very least the person being banned should get a PM telling them it's coming and why. At the core of the thing over there is a mod from the modern section who's clueless about how things go in the vintage section just coming in and throwing their power around. I realize they can do that if they wish. But it's wrong in my view.

Maybe I'm just spoiled because we have such a great team here. Smile

And I'm still waiting for my ban.

And for the record I called him a douchebag asshole fuck knob dickbag.

Yep. He did. But he's not a big Joe fan so no surprise he said the ban wouldn't be shortened.

I think an explanation is a good policy. Sometimes a private one is enough, but sometimes a public one is necessary. I'm a member on the forum for my favourite Swedish hockey team. When they ban a member you can always read the reason to the ban.

OT: Why is Shane no longer a mod on RS? What's the story?

Hey guys,

I think it speaks to the community of TIG that this topic is brought up to the members to way in on their opinions. From what I'm seeing, this place is is a little closer of a community, and the admins and mods obviously have a vested interest in what we, as readers and posters think and feel.

By no means is this to paint a bad light on what goes on at RS, I just think this community might be a little smaller, easier to manage, and a little more focused, plus run by people who are basically "one of us."

That said, i think it really depends on how the owners/operators/admins and mods decide how to run it, but i think it is important that these policies are made clear to the community from the jump, so that there is no confusion like what happened over at RS.

He stepped down cause he had a ton of personal issues to sort out from the past few years. He had a massive sale 2 years ago, if I remember right, to help pay for a divorce, which was public knowledge. I hate to see him step down since he was the most active and respected mod in the vintage section, but its a choice that was well made at the time. Be nice to see him once again be a mod/admin, but from the sounds of it, it wont be any time soon if ever again.

Imo Mods should always give a reason for any actions, but only to the individual concerned. As John said, it's the clearest way for people to learn from their mistakes. I see no reason for public explanations in most cases, unless the actions concern the wider community.

Should Mod's explain their actions? What do you think?

YES, always!

When needed a warning should be issued in public, within the thread that starts to get out of hand for some reason(s).

In case that doesn't help a ban is in place, followed by a PM from the mod explaining the reason(s) behind.
