PostSubject: R2D2 with 1978 Hong Kong Stamp?   R2D2 with 1978 Hong Kong Stamp? I_icon_minitimeThu Jul 26, 2012 3:32 pm

These two figures arrived from Spain today.

R2D2 with 1978 Hong Kong Stamp? IMG_6422

The only reason I bought them was because the ebay description said "1977 Hong Kong (C-3PO) & GMFGI 1978 Hong Kong (R2-D2)".
I was not aware that a 1978 HK datestamp for R2 existed, see Wolff's COO guide below. So big chance that the seller made a mistake (typing 1978 instead of 1977). Nevertheless I took the gamble, bid on the two figures and won.

R2D2 with 1978 Hong Kong Stamp? R2d210

.....and to my surprise the R2 really has a 1978 Hong Kong COO.

R2D2 with 1978 Hong Kong Stamp? IMG_6429

In fact it is the same COO as R5's COO #1.

R2D2 with 1978 Hong Kong Stamp? R5d410

One explanation might therefore be that this R2 is kitbashed from a R5 body with a glued upon R2 decal and R2 legs and dome. But why going into the trouble of making such a custom figure and then use a weathered bad quality sticker as a finishing touch.

The seller has a low feedback, only 30 transactions sofar, so I doubt whether he knows a lot about vintage Star Wars, let alone about the presumed non existence of the 1978 HK datestamp for a R2 figure. Moreover the R2 was not listed as such in the title of the auction.

Here is the original listing:

R2D2 with 1978 Hong Kong Stamp? Dia1-34

This figure is a small surprise, and a bit confusing to be honest.

Please let me know your thoughts, ideas?

BTW: A 1978 COO has been confirmed for a Lili Ledy R2. However, that COO is a "no COO" and lacks "Hong Kong". It is therefore a different figure than being discussed here.

I'm pretty sure- I found one in a collection last year- It was from a collection of Figs with card backs- That dated form late SW to Early ROTJ-
I would guess it was realeased on late ESB and Early ROTJ card backs in the US- It also has very flexible legs.
I value it at 5x a regular R2

Hey Rob, thanks for chiming in. Very Happy

Now it starts to get interesting. The legs of my R2 seem to be more flexible as well, at least compared to how I remember the other R2 legs in my collection.
Let me confirm this when back home tonight.

Can you post some pics of your '78 R2 pls? (COO, dome, back, front, legs).

I will do the same for my figure. maybe we see some similarities.

I don't think this was altered but a legitimate variant- and yes really rare. I am looking for a no coo right now and a decent Ledy - if anyone has a nice one to sell best

See the comparison pics below: 1977 MIHK R2 COO #2 (left) and 1978 HK R2 (right).

I see a few differences:
- Darker blue paint on the legs
- Dull silver dome (or maybe it is just weathered more?)
- More flexible plastic used for the legs (roughly the same force was used in the pics below)

I posted this on RS but figured I would add it here too.

I've never paid much attention to the COOs on the figures but did know the R2 was '77 and R5 was '78. If I had to put a guess down I would think that if R2 and R5 were made in the same factory, which is probable, that a batch of R5 bodies got misplaced and dumped in the R2 bin and used for R2. Simply a factory error. Just think as a factory employee, the barrels look the same, who would notice? Little to their surprise 35 years later here we are. It also wouldn't surprise me to find 77 date on a random R5 too.

So my thought, legit variation though a factory error.

Thanks for your input here, Mike. Your explaination sounds very plausible.

If a R5 body was used to make the 1978 R2 in this thread, one might even argue to coin it a factory error. This is not a TIE Fighter pilot with missing emblems, or a badly welded IG-88. This R2 probably met all quality specs when it left the factory, so technically spoken it is not even an error. That's off course unless the specs said something about the '77 datestamp of the body to be used, which I doubt.

@Michael Ritter wrote:

Two R5 COOs have a 1977 datestamp acording to the guide. Can these R5s (in some cases) be the result of body swaps as well?
The last two COOs also seem to appear on R2 bodies.

The thing is with the copyright dates is that it corresponds to the design of the droid. R2, being an earlybird figure, was designed in 1977 and that date stayed with the design even into the sensorscope and pop up saber runs. The date isn't for the design of the toy but for the realisticly styled robot and that was why it didn't change, until 1985 when the Droids R2 came out. That being a cartoon design got it's own copyright of 1985 even though it was using the same toy design as the '77 marked POTF pop up saber. R5, being developed for later release, was designed in 1978 and got that date as a copyright. So technically, all realistic R2's should have a '77 date no matter a solid dome, sensorscop or pop up saber. All R5s should have '78 dates and all Droids R2s should have '85. Anything outside of that constraint should therefore be a factory error.

Now if there is a '78 marked Ledy I assume it would be the same scenario and quality control didn't really care which barrel got used as long as it looked good. But again, that is an assumption.

Those may be different but I'm sure if you looked you could find an identical '78 R5 to match your '77 R5. It all comes down to different factories with different molds and different paint masks.

id disagree on the factory error theory- since there are numerous 77 and 78 R5 and some
I do think the overstock tub mix up theory is very plausible. form the research on the collection I purchased mine in - It was Probably an early ESB to Early ROTJ card release.

I would like everyones opinion on the legitimacy of the NO coo - original R2- has this been founded carded?
It is all to easy to switch domes for the sensor scope to the original R2 and make a NO coo figure.
thoughts. ??

oh so many things to say......so tired from the weekend..... Sleep Sleep Sleep ...Ill give it a try:

The date stamp /the year indicates when the copyright was acquired for the character. Its 77 for R2 and 78 for R5:
http://swspaceclub.com/wbobafett/a-guide-to-loose-figures/introduction-coos/

1. R5:
77 and 78 R5D4 are different and were made with different heads probably in different factories. While one factory seem to alter or make a new mold for the 78 body, the other factory was just lazy and used the R2-body mold!!!

In this case Im pretty sure: It's NO factory error. Just some people that didnt care/were lazy/ or safed money. These appear both in very high numbers. Equally I would say. This is also untypical for a factory error.

So again: different head mold on both, probably different factories, and high production number= no factory error.

2. R2 Ledy 78 (no coo)
This coo is unique. Ozio is just working on an article and im helping as much as I can. This figure has unique coo and wasnt mixed up, because the coo was only used for that R2 LL figure. All figures known (3 examples) show exactly the same characteristics.

3. US 78 R2
I guess Mike is right here. This seems to be some used R5-body overstock....a small batch was made like this. I tend to think its more used overstock then mixed up bodys in a busy factory. As said R5 with 77 and 78 are different.
I personally have failed in finding a 78 US R2, but wouldnt pay a cent more as for a normal because you need 5 minutes to fake one! And I personally doubt they are all real...maybe none of them is real??? (They are really veeeery easy to fake)

4. Marcos R2.
Thats a total other story. I could assume sth with would be very vague. And Im not a fan of guessing around in public. I will do some research and Im sure we will know more soon. Im definatley thinking its not the same as the US 78. There is identification points that are IMO a bit unique...... Wink

5. No Coo R2 solid dome
This is very argued, I agree. Its also pretty easy to fake. It could be the same error as 78 US R2. In this case my guess would be that some overstock solid domes were used for a "newer" no coo body.
They could also be fake, but I have no reason to doubt my example (normal auction, not described as...etc)
Anyway....Im not saying it's this or that....it's just plain difficult and a carded one would be great of course.

Cheers

Wolff

I am not sure what you mean with a No COO R2 solid dome figure. Is this a R2 having a no COO like the R2 sensorscope? (COO #3 or #5)

so is there anymore info on the 78 r2? ive just purchased one and all seems legit regarding sticker etc the thread says its easy to fake and I agree BUT easy to fake with a repro sticker? as im not aware of any original r2 overstock stickers about!? it depends on if the sticker on mine is original? any input would be helpful from you folks. A lot of repro R2 stickers don't have the correct sheen on them. I'd say yours looks look authentic. A little harder to tell with the front without a better photo, but the back looks good.

By the way, this R2 is in amazing condition — a really nice pick up!
