I'm a self confessed terrible reader. I'm making a genuine effort to read more and get my little ones into getting into the habit as well. Anybody here a voracious reader or into a certain type of genre?

I'm really into books on unintended consequences and stuff like that right now so i knocked out Outliers and Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell.

What about you guys? Anyone read SW novels BTW??

Yes. For a couple years I read to my son every night Star Wars Rebel Force books. He loved them and my Wife enjoyed hearing me read aloud : )
Sports is not my son's strong point, reading and school is. So I really feel like this made a small difference : )

I read quite a bit in the little free time I have. Just finished Carte Blanche, a James Bond novel by Jeffrey Deaver. It was kinda weak. Mostly I like military espionage and suspense. I also try to read whatever my kids are reading at the time. Thank God they are all boys.

.....and yes, years ago I read many of the SW novels but the only ones that left any impression on me were the Timothy Zahn books but only the first 3.

I really like these authors....

Man, I read TONS!! Like Batman, Detective Comics, The Walking Dead, Chew, Morning Glories, Avengers, Avengers: Assemble, Green Lantern, Red Lantern, Green Lantern Corps, Amazing Spider-Man, Action Comics, Superman, Supergirl, Superboy....the list goes on and on.

Seriously, I read damn near every comic that hits the shelves every Wednesday. And I get much more enjoyment from them than novels. And like Steve, I started my son reading with comics. I'd read to him every night, and point out words that he knew. Now he's going into 3rd grade and reading at a 6th grade level.

Great idea for a thread John. Having not read much at all for years, i made an effort 5 or so years ago to read a bit more. Now there's no stopping me. I read at least 2 books a month, normally reading just before i crash out at night. I find it helps me sleep through the night by clearing my mind (which i used to struggle with - y'know, thinking of the day's events etc). I'm always after new authors & novels to try. I'm also trying to get used to reading on my ipad (i have a mountain of books on there ready to go), but although i don't mind reading that way, i still seem to gravitate to paper books atm.
I've just finished The Stand by Stephen King - something i've always meant to read, & thoroughly recommended if you haven't read it (& you're not scared by the sheer size of the book). I also enjoy the Jack Reacher novels which i've only found in the last year. I'm reading a Chris Ryan SAS novel atm, & have got the Game Of Thrones series lined up next.

After college, I hated reading (I think after having to do an essay on 800 pages of The Brothers Karamazov, I just said no more). Then it was only poker books, Doyal Brunson's book, Amarillo Slim, how to bluff, how to play certain types of tournaments, etc.

Then I started to read Star Wars books, just earlier this year (it had been 15 years since The Brothers Karamazov). Darth Plagueis was my first and loved it, then I picked up the Darth Bane novels... which got me completely and totally hooked into reading again. I burned through all three books in about 6 weeks, just reading lightly, but I couldn't put them down. If you haven't read them, you really are missing out on a GREAT series (would be an AMAZING trilogy on the big scree, but would be rated R). Since, I've read other SW EU books and really enjoy even the graphic novels.

My girls actually sorta started me back up again. They got some Young Scholars SW books and I read a few of them.

I love to read. A friend of mine was a big reader when we were in grade 4 or 5. And he got me hooked on reading Mack Bolan novels. So thats how it started and I've read ever since. I admit that in the last year I haven't read a "real" novel since getting back into comics. But they are just as fun and exciting to me, espically if I buy a whole set and can read the whole thing from start to finish.

I'm a huge Stephen King fan and have read most of his books. The Stand is one I still have to read though. And think manybe his last four books I have to get caught up on. I also really enjoy the Robert B. Parker "Spencer" novels, a nice light read. The Janet Evanovich "Stephanie Plum" novels will make you laugh your guts out. Also a big fan of Kathy Reichs and Patricia Cornwells writing.

As for SW novels, some I really like and some....... not so much. I don't get all hung up on weather they are canon or not. I consider them more like fan fiction on a mass market scale.

I'm a pretty voracious reader - I can get through around 4 or 5 books a month of all genres including comics and BDs. My wife and son are both avid readers too (my wife teaches English language and literature) so we practcally have a library between us lol.

I try and add classics and modern classics to my reading list as there are so many great books out there (a little bit like music it takes ages to get around discovering even just a small percentage!). I've also found myself getting more into and appreciating American writers. In the past 6 months I've read modern US classics like:
The Great Gatsby (F. Scott Fitzgerald), To Kill A Mockingbird (Harper Lee), Death Comes For The Archbishop (Willa Cather), Mexico (James A. Michener), Moon Palace (Paul Auster), Short Cuts (Raymond Carver), and Short stories (by Flannery O'Conner)

I would highly recommend all those, plus anything by these non-US writers: Ian McEwan, JM Coetzee, Ben Okri and Jann Martel.... urging everyone to read Life Of Pi by Jann Martel Cool I have read this four times, it is one of my all-time faves and I have even given talks on this amazing book to French English literature students. November 2012 will hopefully see the Ang Lee directed film of this story to finally be released in cinemas bounce

More recently-written books I've read lately have been:
The Millenium Trilogy (Stieg Larsson), The Hunger Games Trilogy (Suzanne Collins), The Passage (Justin Cronin) [WOW!], The Reversal (Michael Connelly), and my current book We Need To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver.

I haven't read anything Star Wars except for the comic books and the 1st novel of Star Wars Smile

One thing I do enjoy about the SW Expanded Universe... yes, they are basically fan fiction (even though they have to be approved by Lucas' Books)... but how the movies get explained more w/the books. We hear of Darth Plagueis for the first time in Ep. III, the master of the Emperor & how it hints that Vader is actually a result of Plagueis experiments (thus, the Star Wars Jesus). Then the book expands on Darth Plagueis life, teaching Palpatine the ways of the Sith then how he found Maul. Same episode mentions the Rule of Two (Yoda's comment). The Darth Bane novels were simply amazing in explaining how Darth Bane became the lone Sith Lord when there were thousands and how/why the Rule of Two was created.

If you try any novel out, that I've read so far (their might be better ones), try 'Darth Bane: Path of Destruction'. After I read that one, I couldn't put any of the trilogy novels about Bane, down. Went on to even look for graphic novels of Bane (Sith vs Jedi for example).

I love to read study study study
My Wife and I, we both are nuts about Haruki Murakami, also I'm a big fan of Charles Bukowski, Thomas Mann, Philip K. Dick and of course JRR Tolkien.
I'm not into comics or SW related novels but I want to give that a try soon.

I love to read, and it does not matter what it is either, as long as I think its well written.
I read a lot of comic books and novels and as I now have my kindle my reading has gone up
At the moment I am reading:

A Game of Thrones
Book 4 A feast for crows
by
George R. R. Martin.

My last 4 books that I have finished reading are:

Mud, Sweat and Tears
by
Bear Grylls

Two Feet, Four Paws: The Girl Who Walked Her Dog 4, 500 Miles
by
Spud Talbot-Ponsonby

Perdido Street Station
by
China MiƩville

An Idiot Abroad: The Travel Diaries of Karl Pilkington

I have never read any of the star wars novels but I do own a few of them just don't appeal to me, but I have read a few of the Dark Horse comics and they were OK nothing special mind.

I was a horrible reader as a kid and seem to be making up for it now.

Currently starting 'Making of The Empire Strikes Back' :) and 'The Big Short', an astounding in depth look at the financial collapse of 2008.

Recently finished these and I recommend them all highly...

'HHhH', riveting and true tale of the assassination attempt on Reinhard Heydrich, the top Nazi official in occupied Czecholslovakia.

'Life', the Keith Richards bio.

'The Devil's Star' and 'The Snowman', well-chiseled and frightening novels about a Norwegian homicide detective. By Jo Nesbo.
