| Holy crap, you should consider a career as a professional pumpkin crafter. Amazing job, Steve! |

| We put a couple pumpkin plants in the back yard this summer in hopes of having a crop of jack-o-lanterns, but we only ended up with one lonely pumpkin that survived. So I think the lone survivor will make an appearance in this thread, hopefully in the next few days. |

| Well I've been hacking and carving for a good while now and I'm pretty pleased with the results! I make pumpkins every year, but just cut simple holes and create faces, thought I'm gonna have to up my game a bit for a competition, so I carved instead of cut First attempt, everyones favourite head hunter Get carving guys! |

| Nice work Alex & Steve!!! I hope to grab another pumpkin this week end, but now that the bar ahs been raised, I will have to re-think my choice! Alex, any chance you can post up a shot of it not lit up in the light so we can see how the carved flesh looks? hehe I am curious to see how deep you went to get the contour looking right with the light still being able to peer through. Anyway... again... great stuff guys! My Jack-O-Vader has been left in the compost pile! cheers! |

| I'll post a couple tomorrow, when the lights better Jay. I actually totally winged it really, quick sketch with a marker and then starter carving with a set of 12 mini wood carving chisels I got last year on ebay for 2 quid to carve some detail into a walking stick I made. Normally I hollow the pumpkin first, but this time I didn't. I did the skull first to get an idea of wether it would work and then just carried on. When I hollowed out his face, I thought I may have gone too deep as the flesh was really soft, but I managed. Once I had finished, I cut the lid and then hollowed the pumpkin. Once I had the middle out I popped a candle in and had a look, after that it was basically a case of hollowing from the inside and deepening some of the lines on the outside and checking with the candle regularly to see how it looked. |

That is interesting! I will try that since I think leaving it whole will leave less of a chance of piercing through and allow you to slowly and carefully gut it after the design has a great start. I had the problem on Vader where I didn't know how deep the wall was gutted and seeing how it was not a perfectly uniform wall I poked through a bunch of times which made it annoying. Leaving it whole at first to get a sense of everything would definitely leave the gutting open to less mistakes. I am stealing your idea, mate! cheers! |

| very cool pumpkin Chris it looks really kick ass with the lights off Have you guys heard of "Funkins" ? They are just foam pumpkins but they look pretty realistic - there are probably other brand names too I'm sure . If anyone wants to use a fake pumpkin to enter the contest that would be fine with me They are pretty cool since you can keep them for display year after year and I have seen that people can get great detail with them too . My wife and I always carve at least 1 real pumpkin every year for tradition but I have a couple funkins that I carved . Mine are very simple because I carved them to look like the pumpkins in the opening credits of Halloween and Halloween 2 (the originals) : my Halloween 1 funkin : this is the pumpkin from the movie opening : |

A certain supermarket chain beginning with 'S' has had plenty of good sized ones in stock (at least they have where I live). |

| Cheers for the tip off. C and A supermarkets were both rubbish, tiny things for 1 squid!! However the budget A, what a beauty and reduce to 1.49 each. _________________________________________________ * Wanted: Lili Ledy, Glasslite, Meccano, Kenner Canada Instruction Sheets, $$$$ waiting!! * Visit My Vintage Paperwork Limelight Click Me! * To Visit The Glasslite Guide & Discussion Thread Click Me!
