We want all users to feel, that they can ask any question here, no matter how basic. I've always lived by the philosophy that there are no dumb questions. This threads purpose is to allow users to ask any question no matter how basic you think it may be. We all were new collectors at one time or another and have had to learn from various sources. I think most of us here enjoy sharing the knowledge that we have. So please ask any question, no matter how basic it may be, that you like answered related to vintage Star Wars collecting here.

I would also like to start this thread off by sharing a link that I think is beneficial to a new collector.

Here is The Star Wars Collectors Archive Lexicon which has several terms used throughout the hobby and definitions for term. I think after several years of collecting we get used to using these terms all the time, but it can be pretty mind boggling to someone just starting out as to what all these terms mean.

OK Shawn I guess it's up to me to ask the first stupid noob question.

I keep seeing pbp showing up in everyones threads. I did a quick forum search but came up empty. So please enlighten me so I can quit feeling clueless.

Thanks

Makes sense Brad, i mentioned this to someone the other day, there are various guides being made to cover the variants etc but i know a lot of people are going to still wonder what it all is, the easiest way i guess is to say like PBP figures come from Spain, Lili Ledy from Mexico etc, but yes - whats needed is a thread with a key to widely used abbreviations.

No probs Brad.

PBP was the Licencee name of the Company who distributed SW figures in Spain, they can be referred to as "Poch" also as the Poch logo was used on the earlier cards.

The actual words that make up PBP are Poch, Borras and Palouzie, no I don't know what it means either Very Happy

Thanks for the question Brad. I wasn't sure if anyone was going to take advantage of the thread. Very Happy

I know there are some differences with PBP loose figures, but I haven't really followed those, so hopefully someone else will be able to tell you what to look for if your seeking those out.

Here is an example of a carded PBP Admiral Ackbar figure.

Another question for the "brain trust".

I recently purchased a white bespin security from a seller in England and I purchased my pop-up saber R2 from a seller in Canada. Now I get the fact that some countries have their own variants, Ledy etc.. but are the actual figures from these countries the same as the US versions, just repackaged, or do they have some subtle variation that I don't see.

There are also several variants for MOC PBP figures. There's a tri-logo, offerless as well as a black and a red offer sticker. Shawn pictured the red offer sticker version. Here are some others photos of the other cardbacks.

Black Offer:

Tri-Logo (this card looks like a normal tri-logo from the front, however you can see the back is clearly different):

And here is the offerless PBP front and back:

Hope that helps clear things up a bit. You can see the PBP logo in the bottom corners of the cardback.

Most differences between figures from different countries come from the actual cardbacks themselves. Not necessarily the actual figure. Especially on the two you listed (Canada and England). So in this case, yes, they are just repackaged US Kenner versions.

However, that being said there are some countries of origin that have subtle differences from their US Kenner counterparts, Lili Ledy probably being the most "famous" of these variations. Hopefully some more of the variation hunters will chime in with some better information for you on that front. Very Happy

But keep asking your questions, as that's the only way we all learn. Just like Joe's post above, I had no idea what the initials for PBP stood for! Very Happy

in the examples you've given- you're unlikely to have a country specific variation. There are few- if any Canadian specific figures (apart from the wind-up R2) and a few Palitoy (British) specific figures - the smooth/silk cape Jawa comes to mind. Is that what you were asking?

James and Chris

That's exactly what I wanted to know. Thanks for your help guys!

Just wanted to make sure I didn't have to buy a US version of these figures.

Without going off the really deep end of variations there are only a handful of country-specific figures. Somebody keep me honest here but I can only think of:

1) PBP (Spain) Lando "Turtleneck" - Only released on a Spanish PBP Card , he has a black neck (vs the matching skin color)

2) Toltoys (OZ) Vinyl Caped Jawa - In case a Vinyl Jawa wasn't expensive enough the Australia version has more distinctive look to the cape.

3) Takara (Japan) C3PO - Only seen on a 12-C Back Japan card, C3PO's head is unlike any other figure. It's elongated, with more pronounced sides (ears, bolts, whatever you want to call it). Just an odd looking version (and F/S in the classifieds *cough* Razz )

There's also a Vader (maybe Jay can jump in) with a distinctive scuplt on I think a Dutch Clipper??

Anywho - Its a dark road to go down ... lol!

Hi Guys,

Can someone please tell me why the palitoy logo is missing from the ROTJ cardbacks as this has been bugging me for ages?

Cheers,

Have no idea to be honest Mark, I think they took it off right at the end of the ESB wave because I have seen some ESB MOC with and without the logo.

Good question ! I am stumped Very Happy

The last Palitoy Cardback was the 45A. The next wave came out with no logo but everything else was the same.

If you want to see the cardbacks check out

I don't think it was a cost issue thing. Mostly because the Palitoy logo is printed on the cards, and not a sticker.

Personally, I would think it was more of a pre-cursor move to the Tri-Logo. That's just a hunch though, based on the moves from different bubbles etc.

It still doesn't explain the absence of the logo, and the weird black bar under the ROTJ logo though. Smile

I thought I had remembered a thread on RS that told about the black bar. So far I've only been able to find this thread which has probably a good guess near the bottom.

The black bar first appeared on the Palitoy ESB 45B cards.

That's an interesting point about the Meccano versions. And actually, that makes the most sense. The designer(s) of the cardbacks must have produced these in mass and used just a generic template. Figuring enough room for both the ESB logo, ROTJ logo and the different languages (Meccano, PBP, etc.).

Now that I think longer on it, (and coming from the designer mentality in me) that makes a ton of sense. Palitoy would've been the sole distributor for the UK before the switch to ESB 45B. After that Kenner must have been making the early decisions to incorporate all other licensee's into the distribution chain thus laying the ground work for the Tri-logos. So the generic card started to enter the fray around this same time.

I would venture a guess that the Meccano logo, PBP/Poch logo, Palitoy logo, etc. fronts started disappearing around this time as well.

**EDIT**

This would also help explain the "moving" logo on the different ESB, ROTJ cards. Some are up closer to the punch, and some appear to be further into the card art. If the generic template was used, I'm sure who ever was laying out the card fronts for printing decided to "fill up" the black bar by moving the logo's up/down according to what they thought looked nicer.
